Executive Director Message

This WEBSITE is intended to provide vital information to those in Africa and beyond who are interested in The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, its mandate, Vision, Mission, Work Programmes, Projects, various key activities and Partners. The Foundation’s main objective of promoting Peace, Unity and People-Centred Self-Reliant Development is rooted in Mwalimu Nyerere philosophy and belief that ‘HUMANITY IS ONE AND PEOPLE ARE CENTRAL TO ANY PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT”. He underscored this principle in his own words when he wrote:

Welcome to Mwallimu Nyerere building Project

A sketch of outlook of the new building

The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation Building has entered a second new stage.  There is now a new allocated Plot No. 2217/1/168 for the Project.  The Foundation now has secured a 99 year Right of Occupancy over the land, with a Land Title No. 118098 issued by the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Settlements.  The old plots no. 60 and 61 along Sokoine Drive have been surrendered to the Ministry, together with land Title No. 78255.

The history of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation Building to be used for the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation offices and as an investment to financially sustain the Foundation goes back to 1996. At the informal Board Meeting of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation held on the 15th August 1996 and at its First Ordinary Board Meeting held on the 11th and 12th November 1996 under the Chairmanship of Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere it was resolved that the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation should develop a building project for the purposes of providing accommodation for its offices and related needs as well as an investment wing to provide funds to financially sustain the Foundation.  Efforts to get a developer to develop the two plots given to the Foundation by H.E. Ali Hassan Mwinyi, the Second Phase President of Tanzania i.e.  plot Nos. 60 and 61 Sokoine Drive/Shaaban Robert Street, did not materialize until March 2008 when the Foundation signed a contract agreement with CRJE Estate Ltd. for construction of a building complex (twin towers of 20 and 14 storeys). The contract agreement to build, operate and transfer (BOT) a commercial property on plot Nos. 60 and 61 coverered the following areas:

Peace and Unity through Justice for All is the mandate within which the Foundation works in its efforts to improve the quality of people’s daily lives and build respect for human equality, integrity, freedom and work. The Foundation’s mission is dedicated service to people by distinguished performance in working with people; encouraging, supporting and facilitating their activities in the process of their capacity building and search for prosperity and progress.

The Ideal Society

The ideal society envisaged by the Foundation and to which it works to support and ensure its sustainability, was once described by Mwalimu Nyerere in the following manner:

Get to know Tanzania

Tanganyika got the Independence in 1961.
Tanganyika and Zanzibar unite together on 1964 and form the united republic of Tanzania.
