About us:
The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation (MNF) was established on 14 June 1996 as a permanent tribute to Julius Kambarage Nyerere’s contribution towards sustainably improving the quality of human relations and the development of humankind. MNF is an intellectually and politically independent, non-partisan think tank that is not affiliated with any political party, government, or interest group
Vision to be a distinguished regional centre of excellence and advocacy in the promotion of peace, unity, and people-centred, self-reliant development in Africa and the world through justice for all.
Mission to advocate for peace, unity, and people-centred, self-reliant development in Africa and the world through research, policy advice, consultative exchanges, and partnerships
Objectives:
The principles of the Foundation are: belief in human equality; social responsibility and accountability; respect for human integrity and freedom; the fellowship of humankind; respect for humanity’s shared hope for peace, security, and prosperity; and African unity.
What We Believe:
The Foundation believes in the fundamental social reality that all people, regardless of their differences, are central to the purpose and justification for the existence of society. Therefore, their culture, needs, aspirations, fears, security, and general wellbeing should shape the social, economic, and political agenda.
This belief is grounded in Julius Kambarage Nyerere’s philosophy that “communities everywhere should enjoy and develop themselves within the context of freedom, participatory democracy, good governance, and peace through social justice for all.”
What We Do:
The Foundation operates as a policy think tank and an advocacy institution for cultural, economic, social, and political justice. It works to promote peace, unity, and people-centred, self-reliant development throughout the world, particularly in Africa.
The Foundation carries out its mandate through interrelated activities including research, research-informed dialogue, publication, and dissemination of information.
