About us:

The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation (MNF) was established on 14 June 1996 as a permanent tribute to Julius Kambarage Nyerere’s contribution towards sustainably improving the quality of human relations and the development of humankind. MNF is an intellectually and politically independent, non-partisan think tank that is not affiliated with any political party, government, or interest group

Vision to be a distinguished regional centre of excellence and advocacy in the promotion of peace, unity, and people-centred, self-reliant development in Africa and the world through justice for all.

Mission to advocate for peace, unity, and people-centred, self-reliant development in Africa and the world through research, policy advice, consultative exchanges, and partnerships

Objectives:

The principles of the Foundation are: belief in human equality; social responsibility and accountability; respect for human integrity and freedom; the fellowship of humankind; respect for humanity’s shared hope for peace, security, and prosperity; and African unity.

What We Believe:

The Foundation believes in the fundamental social reality that all people, regardless of their differences, are central to the purpose and justification for the existence of society. Therefore, their culture, needs, aspirations, fears, security, and general wellbeing should shape the social, economic, and political agenda.

This belief is grounded in Julius Kambarage Nyerere’s philosophy that “communities everywhere should enjoy and develop themselves within the context of freedom, participatory democracy, good governance, and peace through social justice for all.”

What We Do:

The Foundation operates as a policy think tank and an advocacy institution for cultural, economic, social, and political justice. It works to promote peace, unity, and people-centred, self-reliant development throughout the world, particularly in Africa.

The Foundation carries out its mandate through interrelated activities including research, research-informed dialogue, publication, and dissemination of information.

Our Goal:

  • Promotion and Implementation of Self-reliant and people-centred development through national and regional development dialogue for peace and unity.

  • Mobilisation of Inter-African Cooperation. MNF promotes and facilitates cooperation amongst African countries.

  • Mobilisation of Africa for Africa-South Cooperation. MNF promotes and facilitates cooperation between Africa and the South.

  • Constructive North-Africa relations and management of the international system responsible to the vision of one world in expanding interdependence and deepening globalisation. MNF promotes and facilitates the building and sustenance of constructive relations between Africa/South and the developed North.

  • Effective Positioning of Africa for a survival agenda through Growth and Sustainable Development in the 21st Century. MNF actively participate in this agenda by promoting and advocating development which builds the capacity and capabilities of Africa for growth and sustainable development in the 21stCentury.

  • Study of Mwalimu’s Principles and Contributions.  MNF promotes study of principles adopted and practiced by Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere throughout his life. To that end, the MNF to collect and catalogue documents, letters, speeches, interviews, reports and other information concerning him and whenever possible to allow access and use of them by interested institutions and individual persons, and or organize their publication or exhibition in whole or in part.

  • Financial and Operational Capacity of the Foundation. MNF effectively works to build its financial and operational capacity to fulfil its vision, core mission and functions. The programmes to be implemented in each sub-Goal are presented below. Specific projects and strategies for their implementation are articulated in the Five Years Rolling Strategic Plan (FYRSP) which has been drawn up from this corporate strategic plan.
